Bishnu Sharma Sapkota is a doctor in Arupokhari VDC, Gorkha district

“The health clinic was mostly destroyed during the earthquake; we used to have six rooms, now it only has one and a half. We also lost most of the supplies, beds and medicine. The health post building received a “red card” and was not supposed to be accessed but I knew that I needed a place to take care of the sick and wounded villagers. I saved what supplies and medicine I could and made a bamboo and tarps shelter outside of the clinic”

Dr. Sapkota to receive help and funding from the Pennsylvania United Medical Association but Sapkota cut ties with them when they said that in order to rebuild the health clinic they had to attach a church to it; PUMA were too pushy with their Christian religion and Sapkota is a firm believer that healthcare and religion should not mix. Instead, he now receives help and funding from the Real Medicine Foundation, an organization based out of Los Angeles, USA; RMF are funding the rebuilding of the health post (fully equipped), and they are supplying Sapkota and two nurses with a salary to continue working in the village for the next five years

The new facility will have a lab, more staff, separate rooms for males and females, and more medical equipment. RMF and Sapkota have made a deal that the residents of Arupokhari- and especially those who were affected by the earthquake, either mentally or physically- would be given a 30% discount on all medication and visits, and would be given free consultations.

“I am on call 24/7 but I am happy with that. All I want to do is help the people in my village. I do a lot of home visits, especially to deliver babies. After the earthquake I treated a lot of patients who had injuries and fractures. That’s a long time ago but There are still some people with mental disturbances (PTSD and hysteria). This winter was very bad for Nepal, I had to treat a lot of people who had colds, fevers, pneumonia, and respiratory problems.”
